The lady in the painting is probably sketching the white marble sculpture in front of her. The satin of her dress is painted so it looks very real. This exquisite gouache was painted by the famous and talented artist Constant Joseph Brochart, who lived 1816-1899. Brochart was known for his fabulous portraiture. Constant Joseph Brochart has paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in the U.K., the Museum of Lille in France and the Chesterfield Museum in the U.K.
